It’s always summer somewhere in the world and going on a road trip with your fur baby is one of the best things you can do for you both. Get ready to create awesome summer vacation memories but before you load up the car and get going, here are some tips to ensure you’re going to have a safe and enjoyable trip.
Contact Your Vet
Now is a good time to bring your dog for a check-up, especially if it’s been a while since you’ve brought him in. Make sure that your dog’s vaccinations are up-to-date, and ask if additional vaccinations are required for the trip since your dog may encounter risks, like different diseases transferred by ticks, at your destination or along the way.
Bring your dog’s medical records and extra meds, just in case there is a delay in your trip. Also, get the contact information, including the address, for a 24/7 emergency dog vet at your destination.
Plan Your Route
Ensure that your schedule accommodates time for regular breaks. Your dog needs to have the opportunity to relieve himself and to walk around and experience a new environment.
Have a 15 to 30 minute break every 4 hours. You can also make the trip more fun for both of you when you plan stopovers at places with pet-friendly attractions.
Book Pet-Friendly Accommodations
As much as we wish that our beloved dogs are accepted wherever we go, the truth is, you only have a limited option in hotels, resorts and even campsites as they often have restrictions. This will require you to contact these lodgings in advance to find out their pet policies, including breed restrictions, rules, and possible fees.
Pack A Bag For Your Dog
Prepare a separate bag for your dog’s things. Aside from what you will need at your destination, also think of all the places you will visit along the way when packing. You can bring items from the essentials to the not so necessary. Items you may need include:
- Food and food bowl
- Water, water bottle and bowl
- LeashToys for chewing and fetching
- Poop bags
- Treats
- Medications
- Blanket and dog towel
- Protective clothing
- Dog-safe insect repellent and sunscreen
- Water googles
- Brush and shampoo
- Flea comb and tick remover
Update Your Dog’s ID
One of our biggest fear as a dog parent is if our beloved fur baby gets lost during our trip. I’m sure you’ll be half-crazed, frantically looking for him in every corner. Make sure that his tag has your mobile number and an additional emergency number of a friend or family member in or near the vacation area.
Prepare Your Dog For The Trip
It’s always exciting to start your long-awaited trip but before you head out the open road, take a nice, long walk, so he’s ready to rest and will be relaxed during the trip.
Maintain Your Routine
It’s difficult to do your daily routine exactly as you would at home, but it’s best that you stick to the schedule you have at home. Once you reach your destination, follow the same schedule for feeding and walking your dog when you’re at home. Go for a longer walk than usual to help him release that extra energy from the excitement of the trip.
Now that you’ve taken the time to plan your itinerary, pack your travel stuff, you can now relax and have a wonderful time with your beloved fur baby.
